Introduction Deuteronomy 4:35 Jeremiah 23:5-6 1 Corinthians 8:6 John 1:1-3,14 2 Corinthians 3:17-18 Conclusion |
| The Trinity is one of the central doctrines of Christianity. The Trinity is where God appears in three distinct persons of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit (Ghost). Although the word Trinity does not appear in the bible, there are many verses that prove the doctrine true. Although many have said that the Trinity is the belief in three Gods, nothing could be further from the truth. Paramount to the doctrine is the belief in one God and the Bible clearly indicates that there is only one God. At the same time, as early as in Genesis 1:26 we see God's plural nature. In this set of verses we see that God would rise up a King, and that this King would be Lord. Within our limited knowledge, the Trinity can be difficult to grasp. There are some that use the example where water can exist in liquid, vapor, or ice, yet it is still only one water. Others use the example of a tribunal in which there is three judges, yet they together form 'the court.' The Father is God, the God of the Old Testament and of Moses and Abraham. The Father is the creator of the universe, all that we know and all that we see. We see that from the beginning, the Word was with God and the Word was God. But then the Word was made into flesh to live on the earth. The name of the Word is Jesus Christ and he is the Son in the Trinity. In Matthew 1:23 we see that Jesus is also known as Emmanuel, which means 'God with us.' The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. Some have claimed that the Holy Spirit is not a person, but instead a force or power of God. But we see that the Holy Spirit speaks (Mark 13:11), bears witness (Romans 8:16), can be blasphemed against (Luke 12:10), and refers to himself in first person (Acts 13:2). These are all characteristics of a person and more than a force or power. With our limited knowledge, we are not able to understand how God can be three distinct persons and still be only one God. Yet, we are assured through many more verses than were presented here that not only is this possible, but also is the truth. |
